Installing the Quicktime Plugin

FreeTube channels make use of various plugins, one of which is the Quicktime plugin which offers compatibility amongst several popular operating system platforms. Much like the Windows Media Plugin, the Quicktime plugin requires you to install a small bit of software to use it properly. The software comes straight from Apple and comes pre-bundled with certain operating systems and browsers, such as OSx and Safari. Installing the Quicktime plugin will allow you to view the channels that use it.

This tutorial will walk you through the steps involved in installing the Quicktime Plugin, and ensuring that it works within your browser.

Step 1: There are two ways to acquire the Quicktime plugin, through Apple's Quicktime site or by using the Quicktime Alternative pack. We recommend you use the latter, Quicktime Alternative, as it uses less resources and does not come with all the unnecessary bundled software that Apple's release of Quicktime contains. Additionally Apple's release of Quicktime is adware supported, meaning that it features advertisements and nag-screens to entice users to pay for the upgraded version. The Quicktime Alternative pack is 3rd party software, and is not affiliated with Apple Computers. If you are uncomfortable installing a 3rd Party product, you can use Apple's Quicktime instead without any difference in functionality or operation. Download either version to your local hard drive.

Step 2:
Launch the setup file you have just downloaded on to your hard drive, and install the Quicktime program or Quicktime Alternative pack to a directory of your choice. You can configure the player options as you see fit, just be sure to install it to a drive that is accessible to you.

Step 3: Upon completing the installation of Quicktime, you may be asked to restart your computer - restart if necessary. After this has been done, you should now be able to launch Quicktime or "Quicktime Alternative/Media Player Classic" and play videos and songs on your computer. Additionally, most web browsers should automatically recognize that the plugin is installed and operate properly. Visit FreeTube Diagnostics to ensure the plugin works in your browser.

Troubleshooting

Quicktime should work directly after install, if you encounter any problems during installation consult the following guide:

If you receive Error 2738 during installation, try the following:

  1. Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click on Command Prompt -> Run As Administrator.
  2. Type cd c:\windows\system32 and press Enter.
  3. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and press Enter. Note: if you didn’t run as Administrator, regsvr32 will fail.

If registration fails with error code 0x80004005, then you need to do the following:

  1. Download Windows Script 5.6
  2. Install it and the system will inform you that a newer version of some files are already installed on your computer. You must allow the installer to overwrite the newer versions. But do this one file at a time, until you see vbscript.dll. After that you can simply allow the installer to keep the newer files on your system.
